Grand View Garden Volunteer Opportunities

Grand View Elementary is fortunate to have a fantastic garden program through Palos Verdes School Gardens (PVSG), supported by our PTA and run by parent volunteers.

Are you interested in inspiring our kids' growth through gardening? If so, this is the opportunity for you! There are 2 ways to volunteer:

  1. Become a Grade-Level Garden Docent

Each grade level is assigned a Garden Docent for the year (one parent per grade). Docents teach up to 3 to 4 half-hour lessons 5 times a year, each of which is part lesson and part hands-on garden project. Please email the Garden Chairs (Lisa Jutras or Lindsay Dellamaggiora) if you are interested.

No teaching or gardening experience required! Training is provided, and all lessons are designed to be taught by volunteer parent Docents.

Responsibilities:

The PVSG program and lessons are planned, and training covers the necessary safety protocols. Docents and parent volunteers can still expect to lead or assist teachers in projects in some form. We will communicate soon with an updated schedule, so stay tuned. And thank you for your patience.

  1. Assist Your Classroom Docent

Once the classroom lessons are scheduled, Docents will ask for parent volunteers to assist with each lesson. Assisting parents will help set up before and clean up after the lesson, as well as distribute materials and assist students during the lesson as needed. This is a 1-hour time commitment per lesson (15 minutes each for set-up and clean-up, and 30 minutes for the lesson itself).

Assisting parents may volunteer for as many or as few lessons as they wish. This is a great alternative for parents who want to be involved but can’t commit to the Docent responsibilities.

How to sign up:

Watch for an email from your classroom Docent (late September/early October) asking for volunteers.

We hope you'll join us!

Kids love the PVSG program and look forward to the lessons and garden activities. It is fantastic to see kids become inspired by nature and gain confidence in their abilities by learning how to cultivate a garden. They gain exposure to different plant varieties, soil types, insects & pollinators, and most importantly, the many tasty food combinations presented at the end of every lesson.
